NAS StorInt(tm) Buying Guide

There are many Network Attached Storage (NAS) buying guides available today presenting themselves as objective, fact based comparisons. I try my best to avoid opinion in our buying guide but probably fail more than I suspect.

One thing you won’t find here is a “best NAS system”. There are just too many variables for most application environments to claim one best storage system for everyone. So if you searching for that, please go elsewhere.

However, you will find lot’s of NAS performance data here, charted and cut in as many ways as I deem fit to judge NAS system performance. I believe performance data, using published and audited results, is as objective as one can get.

Also, I have supplied extensive tables identifying system capacities, features, and functionality covering 47 NAS systems. I know there are many more out there, but I had to stop somewhere. Nonetheless, you will find all the major vendors (Dell, EMC, HP, HDS, IBM, Oracle and NetApp) represented here as well as a smattering of a few others. It’s not exhaustive and wasn’t meant to be but I do believe somewhere in this list one can find the right NAS storage for their data center.

NAS Solution Buying Guide Product Description

Our NAS Buying Guide evolved from an article Ray did for Storage Magazine on “NAS Consolidation Options” (see our Articles page). In that article we focused on larger enterprise class NAS systems but have broaden that discussion to mid range and smaller NAS storage for the Buying Guide.

We are currently on our 3rd version of the NAS Buying Guide (previously named Briefing) and intend to update it every quarter after we review the latest SPECsfs2008 performance results in our newsletter. Previous versions focused more on NAS storage performance rankings and how to obtain the best performance from existing NAS systems. In this guide we decided to take the approach to provide the best, most objective information we could find to support the NAS storage purchasing decision.
