Nick,Thanks for your comment. As far as I know there has been lot's of activity in the commercial sector, some activity in the standards sector (see CDMI from SNIA), some progress in free (open source) facilities to access commercial cloud providers (e.g., see cloudstorage.sourceforge.net) but nothing to support the peer-to-peer creation of a storage cloud. As I said in the post, it seems relatively straightforward to implement a peer-to-peer storage cloud facility but the real problem may lie in how to monetize such a system. Napster and other P2P systems had stuff that lot's of people wanted, were already trading in and thus, were able to get up to a sizable base pretty quickly, something like this seems to be a harder sell... If your truly interested in going after this perhaps starting an open source project around it would be worthwhile.Ray

One year has passed since the posting of this article. I'd like to ask: has this technology gone some steps further in the meantime? Have the projects you mentioned above (boinc, seti) been used to develop this idea? Did any other open source project arise? Or maybe, did any reason arise why this kind of technology might not be feasible or not be worth the effort? This topic is very fascinating. It is just strange that very few seems to be happening in the field.
